Kalamaki is located in the southeast side of the island, next to Laganas and 7 km from the town of Zante. It’s a peaceful well-developed resort, with an amazing beach, several restaurants, taverns, bakeries and many shops.
The golden sandy beach of Kalamaki with the crystal clear blue water is a protected place due to the endangered loggerhead turtles – “caretta caretta” – which lay their eggs there. That’s why it’s not allowed to stay at the beach after sunset or do watersports. During July and August, you can see the marked nests on the sand where sun is “hatching” turtles’ eggs, and you might see a turtle swimming in their natural environment if you take a cruise with the glass bottom boats there.
Marathonisi
Also, when you are in Kalamaki, don’t lose the opportunity to get on a small boat and visit Marathonissi. Marathonissi is a tiny island, few meters away from Kalamaki coastline, also a reproduction area of Caretta Caretta turtle.
